Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

No expectation of policy change from Trump, says Russian ambassador Gatilov

Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, addressed concerns on Thursday regarding the potential for any major shift in US policy under the newly elected President Donald Trump. Gatilov stated that Moscow had “no illusion” about a change in the overall US approach toward Russia, emphasizing that the main shift might only be in terms of dialogue between the two countries.

“I can assure you that we have no illusion about the president-elect or the new Congress now under Republican control. regardless of domestic political shifts, consistently pursues a sense of containing Moscow, and this orientation is deeply rooted, unfortunately, and the change of administration does little to alter it,” Gatilov remarked during a news briefing.

Despite the lack of expectation for a drastic policy change, Gatilov acknowledged the potential for a shift in the diplomatic dialogue. “The only shift that might be possible is a dialog between our countries, something that has been lacking during the last several years during President (Joe) Biden’s administration,” he said.

Looking ahead to the new administration, Gatilov expressed a willingness to engage on specific issues. “Russia, while protecting its national interest and the objectives of its special military operation, will engage with the new US administration when it assumes office,” he added.

On the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Gatilov remarked on Trump’s previous statements regarding the war, saying, “Trump promised to settle the Ukrainian crisis overnight. Okay, let’s keep track. But we know that we are realistic people. Of course, we understand that this will never happen. But if he starts or suggests something to start the political process, it’s welcome.”

He emphasized that any negotiations or discussions between the two countries must be grounded in the “realities on the ground,” referring to the current situation in Ukraine.

Gatilov also reminded reporters of the actions taken during Trump’s previous term, noting, “We have no illusion about the new administration’s stance on Russia, because, well, let’s recall that during the previous administration, Trump administration. It was he who started these introductions of sanctions and many anti-Russian legislations were adopted.”

On the issue of foreign military support, Gatilov addressed a question regarding the potential for Russia to accept foreign troops, saying, “This issue is not under discussion. Because we have enough military capabilities. We can cope with the situation by ourselves. But of course, if somebody wants to come and help, why not?”

He made it clear, however, that Russia is not actively seeking outside military intervention. “We are not asking anybody to send their troops to Ukraine,” Gatilov added.

In response to the presence of foreign fighters, the ambassador pointed to the significant numbers of mercenaries and volunteers on the Ukrainian side, mentioning individuals from Western countries such as Canada and Poland.

His comments came amid recent reports, including claims by NATO chief Mark Rutte in late October, that North Korean troops were operating in the Kursk border region of Russia, an area where Ukrainian forces have established a foothold. South Korean and US officials have further stated that over 10,000 North Korean troops are currently deployed in the region
