Lebanese PM Mikati calls on Israel to respect ceasefire deal

Lebanese Prime Minister Naguib Mikati called for pressure on Israel to comply with the ceasefire. Mikati called for Israel to stop its violations and to abide by the ceasefire.

Lebanese Prime Minister Naguib Mikati, in his meeting with the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee, stressed the need to put pressure on Israel to comply with the ceasefire. Mikati stated that Israel’s violations must be stopped and the ceasefire must be fully adhered to.

According to a statement from Mikati’s office, the Lebanese Prime Minister met with members of the “Ceasefire Monitoring Committee” that monitors the ceasefire with Israel in the Prime Ministry building.

The meeting was also attended by Lebanese Chief of Staff Joseph Aoun, Ceasefire Supervision Committee Chairman US Major General Jasper Jeffers, French Major General Guillaume Ponchin, Lebanese Army Southern Litani Sector Commander Brigadier General Edgar Lowndes and United Nations (UN) Interim Peace Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Mission Chairman and Commander General Aroldo Lazaro.

During the meeting, Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati demanded that Israel cease its ceasefire violations and immediately withdraw from the areas it entered in southern Lebanon.

According to Anadolu, The Lebanese government said in a statement that Mikati reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to the agreement, calling the Israeli violations of the cease-fire deal “unacceptable.”

Recalling his visit to southern Lebanon yesterday, Mikati said that stability should be increased so that the displaced can return to their places of residence.

Mikati called on the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee to “put pressure on Israel to abide by the terms of the ceasefire, especially to withdraw from the occupied territories and to cease its violations.”

According to the data of the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 4,061 people, including 1,106 women and children and 222 healthcare workers, have been killed and 16,661 people have been injured in Israeli attacks since October 8, 2023.

The ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel came into effect on Wednesday, November 27 at 04:00 local time (05:00 Turkish time).

The second article of the agreement stated that “the Lebanese government will prevent Hezbollah or any other armed group present on Lebanese territory from carrying out any operations against Israel, and Israel will not launch any military attacks on civilian, military or state targets in Lebanon, by land, sea or air.”

Under the agreement, the Lebanese army will gradually deploy to areas occupied by Israel in southern Lebanon within 60 days.

According to Anadolu, The Lebanese government said in a statement that Mikati reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to the agreement, calling the Israeli violations of the cease-fire deal “unacceptable.”
