SAN FRANCISCO — School Wi-Fi networks have blocked gaming sites for the better part of two decades. Students have spent the better part of two decades routing around them. In 2026, one phrase has become shorthand for both the frustration and the workaround: Unbanned G+.

The term does not refer to a single website, product, or company. It functions as a collective label, part search query and part community signal, for a category of browser-based gaming portals that sidestep institutional firewall restrictions by hosting lightweight HTML5 games on platforms that school network administrators already trust. Google has no official connection to any of it.

The mechanics behind these platforms are less complicated than the name implies. HTML5 and JavaScript games run entirely inside a browser tab, requiring no downloads, no plugins, and no installation footprint. File sizes are deliberately small. The key variable is not the game technology but the host domain. Institutional firewalls evaluate destination URLs, not the content sitting behind them. When a gaming portal hosts its catalog inside a Google Sites subdomain, the network filter sees a domain it has whitelisted rather than a gaming site. The game loads. The student plays. The administrator’s blocklist, built to flag obvious gaming destinations, registers nothing unusual.

This is not a new technique. Unblocked gaming platforms have operated under a rotating series of names, including Unblocked Games 66, Unblocked Games World, and dozens of variants, since the early 2010s. The addresses change as IT departments update blocklists; the platforms reappear under new mirror domains and the cycle begins again. What distinguishes 2026 is the consolidation of search behavior around a single phrase. The “G+” suffix has become a recognizable signal within the category, functioning as a claim, whether justified or not, that a portal offers a broader or more curated library than basic unblocked game sites. There is no industry-standard definition of what “G+” means in this context, and the designation varies from one portal to the next.

Google Sites is not the only infrastructure layer these portals now exploit. GitHub Pages, a static hosting service used widely in computer science education, has emerged as a parallel distribution channel. Alongside these hosting strategies, a newer class of tools known as Ultraviolet proxies, often abbreviated UV, has grown in adoption. Popular titles across these platforms skew toward lightweight, browser-native games with wide recognition. Pac-Man, Tetris, Run 3, Fireboy and Watergirl, and Flappy Bird appear consistently across portals, alongside newer staples including Slope, Happy Wheels, and 1v1.LOL — a competitive shooting game with a building mechanic that has acquired its own dedicated following among secondary school students. These titles load in seconds and require no account creation. Longer-session multiplayer titles appear on some portals but less reliably, and the catalog at any given portal may shift without notice as hosting arrangements change. The audience is primarily students on school-issued Chromebooks, the device of choice on most US school networks, looking for a few minutes of play during a break or between classes.

A secondary meaning runs alongside the gaming one. Google+ was a social networking platform Google operated from 2011 to 2019, notable for its circle-based privacy model that allowed users to share content with precisely defined groups. When Google shut the consumer version down in April 2019 it left a community that had genuinely valued those features. Some search traffic for Unbanned G+ comes from that community, specifically from people seeking archived posts, revival projects, or platforms that attempt to recreate what Google+ offered. Community-run alternatives have appeared on decentralized infrastructure since the shutdown, but none carries Google’s branding, none has achieved mainstream adoption, and Google has made no public statement about any revival.

The practical gaming ecosystem is where the more pressing questions sit. Platform quality across portals operating under the Unbanned G+ label varies considerably.
