DES MOINES – Seven years were erased the moment a very large man stepped through the curtain at Casey’s Center.
Big Cass, whose WWE run ended in acrimony in 2018 before a stretch of independent bookings and years spent outside the company’s orbit, returned to Monday Night Raw on August 3 and made his intentions brutally clear. After Je’Von Evans pinned Ethan Page with an OG Cutter to continue his momentum as one of the brand’s most electrifying young prospects, Cass materialized from the back, dropped Evans to the mat, and stood over him as the Des Moines crowd, still buzzing from Sunday’s SummerSlam, processed what it had just seen. Cass said afterward that Evans “will not be the last one to be laid out.”
It was the sharpest punctuation of a night that Raw needed to deliver. WWE SummerSlam 2026 in Minneapolis had reshuffled every major storyline, and Monday’s three-hour episode on Netflix was expected to make the consequences visible. It did that, and occasionally more.
Roman Reigns opened the show with a statement that itself felt like a new direction. The reigning World Heavyweight Champion told the Des Moines audience that he and Seth Rollins, who spent much of 2025 and early 2026 locked in a feud that wore both men thin, “may have found some peace.” The Tribal Chief offered it almost gently, as if testing how the crowd would absorb the idea that the two most reliable main-event names on the brand might coexist rather than collide. Before the crowd’s response could clarify itself, LA Knight walked out.
Knight, whose career arc this year has tracked from fan favorite to increasingly credible title contender, told Reigns that peace was fine but that whatever territory Seth Rollins had occupied at the top of the card, he planned to fill. The exchange was composed, Knight establishing himself without theatrics, Reigns declining to be rattled. The implication was unmistakable: the World Heavyweight Championship picture gained a legitimate third figure, and Knight did not need to do anything undignified to get there.
Later in the evening, Oba Femi took a microphone and explained to the audience what beating Brock Lesnar in a Hell in a Cell at SummerSlam actually meant to him. Femi, who spent years on the roster as a powerhouse waiting for a moment big enough to contain him, was unambiguous. He was there to take down the old guard, beginning with anyone who had occupied space at the top of the roster longer than their results could justify. Bron Breakker, who had been watching from ringside, received the message. Breakker said nothing audible on the broadcast. He did not need to.
Femi’s Breakker confrontation was left unresolved, which the booking earned. Lesnar reportedly called Femi “the future of WWE” in the postmatch, and that weight already exists in the building. Femi will get his moment of consequence soon enough.
The women’s division, however, produced the evening’s most sustained energy.
Becky Lynch returned to Raw in the second hour and walked into a confrontation with Raw Women’s Champion Liv Morgan that cut to the point fast. Lynch told Morgan she was not even the best women’s champion in her own group, an insult specific enough to be difficult to argue away. Morgan’s expression suggested she understood its precision.
Before that exchange could develop, Stephanie Vaquer returned. She walked directly toward Morgan and the confrontation shifted shape entirely. Lynch and Vaquer, two women with entirely different histories with the championship picture, ended up facing each other across the ring. No match was announced. The implication of one was sufficient.
The show’s in-ring results reinforced the post-SummerSlam reset without attempting to rewrite the standings overnight. Jacob Fatu defeated Royce Keys in a Street Fight that gave Fatu the kind of performance the Tongan Death Grip finish requires: a long, punishing route that makes the submission feel like relief rather than spectacle. Chad Gable and Penta teamed to defeat Judgment Day’s Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh via Chaos Theory, Gable pausing afterward to acknowledge the crowd in what the night framed as a thank-you for a decade of work. Sol Ruca and Roxanne Perez produced one of the evening’s sharper matches before Perez introduced a disqualification that preserved her character without diminishing Ruca’s credibility. Bron Breakker submitted Joe Hendry efficiently.
Bleacher Report graded Monday’s episode B+, with the women’s division receiving its highest collective praise.
What Monday could not answer was how long Cass’s return run will last, given his track record with injuries and availability across multiple promotions, or what Becky Lynch’s presence actually costs a women’s division that already has Vaquer and Morgan in its orbit. Raw after SummerSlam is supposed to start something. This one started several things at once, and left enough unresolved to make next week feel necessary.
