Today is a rare shape. Both pangrams use all seven letters exactly once each, which makes them perfect pangrams, and they are anagrams of one another: DORMANT and MORDANT.

- Eighteen of the 57 words are only four letters long. They are worth one point each and they are where a stuck solver should look.

Spelling Bee Pangrams Today: DORMANT and MORDANT
DORMANT is the one most solvers find. MORDANT is the one they miss, and it is worth knowing on its own terms: as an adjective it means bitingly sarcastic, and as a noun in dyeing it is the substance that fixes a colour to cloth.
Each is worth 14 points, seven for the length and seven for the pangram bonus. Between them they are more than a tenth of the day’s total.

The Words Most Solvers Will Not Have
NOTATOR, NATANT and NONART are the three that stop people short of Queen Bee. NATANT means floating or swimming, NONART is exactly what it looks like, and NOTATOR is one who notates.
TANTARA is the other. It is a trumpet blast, and it is a word that exists in English almost entirely for the benefit of puzzles. ANNATTO, the orange-red food colouring from achiote seed, is more useful outside the game than inside it.
On the everyday end, RANDO is now accepted, which still surprises solvers who learned the list before it was.
One Note on the Centre Letter
Several sites publishing today’s puzzle give the centre letter as D. It is not. ANNOTATOR, OTTOMAN, ANNATTO, TANTARA and NOTATOR are all valid answers today and none of them contains a D, which is impossible if D is the centre. Every one of the 57 words contains N. If you have been filtering on D, that is why your list is short.
