Gold Rate Today, August 25, 2026: 24K Slips ₹22 and Seven Cities Quote One Number

A ₹200 fall on ten grams is less than the hallmarking charge. What actually matters this week is how little the city labels mean and a Fed chairman who says he is not constrained by market prices.

Gold rate today, August 25, 2026: 24 carat gold is ₹16,375 a gram and 22 carat is ₹15,010, down ₹22 and ₹20 from Monday. On a ten gram chain that is a saving of ₹200, which is less than most jewellers charge to hallmark the piece.

That is the honest scale of Tuesday’s move. It reverses about a quarter of Monday’s ₹88 jump and leaves 22 carat gold above ₹15,000 a gram for a second day, a level it had never held before this week. Anyone reading the fall as a buying window is looking at a rounding error on a metal that has gained more than a third in a year.

Rates exclude GST, making charges and hallmarking. Monday’s figures were 16,397, 15,030 and 12,293 a gram. The 24 carat fall is 0.13 per cent.

Two things on the board actually matter today, and neither of them is the ₹22.

Gold Rate Today City-Wise: Seven Cities, One Number

The gold rate today in India is close to fiction city by city. Seven of the nine cities on the board carry identical figures to the rupee, and the only variation anywhere in the country is ₹150 in Delhi and ₹50 in Ahmedabad on a base above ₹1,63,000, differences under a tenth of one per cent.

That uniformity is the story, and it is worth understanding why it exists rather than reading the city labels as though they meant something.

Pune1,63,7501,50,1000
Kerala1,63,7501,50,1000
Seven of the nine cities on the board are identical to the rupee. Delhi is the only meaningful premium at ₹150 per ten grams, with Ahmedabad ₹50 behind it. Both sit under a tenth of one per cent of the base.

City-level gold rates in India are not independent quotes. The tracker figure is built from bullion association prices and the futures curve and then published against a list of city names, which is how nine cities end up carrying one number. Where a genuine local premium does exist it comes from state association margins, transport and local levies, and it is small. Delhi’s ₹15 a gram is about three per cent of the goods and services tax charged on that same gram.

For a buyer in Delhi the practical effect is ₹15 a gram, or ₹150 on a ten gram purchase, and in Ahmedabad ₹5 a gram. Neither is a reason to travel. The gold rate today in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Kerala is the same ₹16,375 a gram to the rupee, which is why a single national figure serves all seven.

Gold Rate Today 22K and 24 Carat Gold Rate Today: What Separates the Two

The ₹1,365 a gram between the 24 carat gold rate today and the 22 carat figure is not a discount. It is the missing metal.

Twenty-four carat is 99.9 per cent pure and too soft to hold a stone or survive daily wear, which is why it reaches buyers as bars and coins rather than ornaments. Twenty-two carat is 91.6 per cent gold with the balance made up in copper, silver or zinc, and that alloy is what lets a chain keep its shape. Eighteen carat, at 75 per cent, is harder still and is where most stone-set jewellery sits.

The arithmetic is exact. Multiply today’s 24 carat rate of ₹16,375 by 0.916 and you get ₹15,000, within ₹10 of the published 22 carat figure. The purity ratio is doing all the work.

The Number You Read Is Not the Number You Pay

Every page publishing the gold rate today in India, including this one, quotes the metal value. Nobody sells you metal value.

A ten gram 22 carat chain at today’s rate carries ₹1,50,100 of gold. Add making charges, which run from about 8 per cent on a plain machine-made chain to 25 per cent on worked bridal jewellery, then GST at 3 per cent on the metal and 5 per cent on the making, and the till price lands between ₹1,67,211 and ₹1,94,004.

Making charges vary by piece and by shop, from single digits on a plain chain to a quarter of the metal value on worked bridal jewellery. GST is applied at 3 per cent on the metal and 5 per cent on making charges billed as a service. Hallmarking is charged separately, usually ₹45 a piece. No rate page in the country performs this arithmetic, which is why the number you read is never the number you pay.

That is a spread of ₹26,793 on the same ten grams of gold, decided entirely by which piece you pick. It dwarfs the ₹200 the rate fell today, it dwarfs the ₹150 Delhi premium, and it is the number nobody quotes.

What Moved Gold Overnight

The Indian counter fell today. The world price did the opposite.

Spot gold rose about 0.6 per cent to $4,677.19 an ounce on Tuesday, its highest since mid-May, and spiked close to $4,700 intraday. US gold futures went with it, up around half a per cent at $4,720.30. So the ₹22 that came off the domestic 24 carat rate was not the international market handing anything back. It was a retail tracker publishing a figure struck before that move, on a base that does not follow spot tick for tick.

The direction of travel over any longer window is not in dispute. Fortune put the metal at $4,674 an ounce on Monday morning in New York, up 15.21 per cent on the month and 39.94 per cent on the year. Roughly seven of those points have come in the past week alone.

What put it there is fiscal rather than monetary. The Treasury’s expansion of its buyback programme for long-dated debt weakened the dollar and kept a lid on yields, reviving what traders call the debasement trade, the same bid that carried gold through 2025 alongside the silver rate holding near record territory. Eastern Herald covered that mechanism when the metal cleared $4,600.

Citi told clients that a dovish surprise on Friday would be, in its phrase, ultra-bullish for gold, because the market would price out rate hikes and refocus on the debasement trade at the same time.

The Indian print fell today while spot gold rose to a three-month high, because the tracker figure was struck before the international move; retail and international quotes sit on different bases and do not reconcile directly. Month and year changes are Fortune’s as of Monday morning in New York, and other trackers publish slightly different bases.

Why Friday Matters More Than Tuesday

Kevin Warsh took over as chairman of the Federal Reserve on 22 May and has spent his first three months deliberately withdrawing the forward guidance markets had learned to expect. On Friday, 28 August, he gives his first Jackson Hole keynote at 10 a.m. Eastern.

He has already said what he wants it to do. After the July meeting he told reporters he intended the speech to frame the big questions rather than get caught in what he called myopic quarter-point moves, and added that the Fed is not constrained by market prices. Inflation is running at 3.4 per cent against a 2 per cent target.

For gold that is the whole week. A chairman who says he is unconstrained by market pricing, speaking on inflation that is running seventy per cent above target, can move bullion further in twenty minutes than four sessions of Indian retail prints. Tuesday’s ₹22 is noise ahead of it.

What This Page Cannot Tell You

Whether the gold rate today above is the rate your jeweller quotes.

The national figure is a tracker print derived from bullion association quotes and the futures curve, not a counter price collected from showrooms. A second tracker put national 24 carat about ₹900 below this one on the same morning last week, and that gap is a basis difference between methodologies rather than an error in either. Local premiums, purity certification and the making charge on the specific piece will all move the final number more than the daily change does.

What can be said precisely is this. The gold rate today is down ₹22 a gram, 22 carat is holding above ₹15,000 for a second day, seven of the nine cities on the board are quoting one identical number, and the number that decides this week is not printed in India at all.

Correction, 26 August 2026: An earlier version of this article reported that Chennai had opened a ₹230 premium over the national 24 carat rate, and carried that claim in the headline and in the city table. Chennai printed the national figure of ₹1,63,750 per ten grams on 25 August, in line with six other cities. Delhi and Ahmedabad, at ₹150 and ₹50 above national, are the only city premiums on the board. The headline, the city table and the surrounding section have been corrected.
