GREENVILLE, S.C. — When Wladimir Klitschko posted on Instagram on August 21, he addressed his daughter before he addressed the public. “To our daughter Kaya,” the retired boxing champion wrote, “I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”
It was the day Hayden Panettiere would have turned 37. She had died nine days earlier.
The Drug Enforcement Administration joined local authorities investigating Panettiere’s death on August 20, adding a federal dimension to a case that law enforcement in Greenville County, South Carolina, has not publicly explained. Panettiere, who became one of American television’s most recognizable young faces on NBC’s “Heroes” before her years as Juliette Barnes on “Nashville,” was found in cardiac arrest at her Greenville apartment on August 16 and declared dead at 2:32 p.m. after resuscitation efforts failed. Dispatch audio reviewed by NBC News referenced a possible overdose. No cause of death has been officially determined.
What the DEA is looking for, and whether it has found anything, has not been disclosed.
Klitschko’s birthday tribute made no mention of the investigation. His post instead settled into the particular grief of a father explaining loss to a child who has to grow up with the explanation. “Today is Hayden’s birthday,” he wrote. “Instead of celebrating the way we had planned, today we celebrate her life, her spirit, and the love she brought into this world.” He asked, simply: “If you’re reading this, I ask just one thing: even if only for a moment, think about LOVE.”
Then: “Happy Birthday, Hayden. You are loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten.”
Klitschko and Panettiere had been engaged from 2013 to 2018. Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, their daughter, is eleven. The two parents had not been together for nearly eight years by the time Panettiere died, but the father was still thinking, publicly, about how to explain the mother.
Panettiere had spoken about her own life more directly in the months before her death than she had at perhaps any other point in her career. She appeared on Jay Shetty’s podcast in May 2026, just three months before she was found unresponsive in Greenville, to discuss a Neutrogena sponsorship she had lost years earlier after speaking publicly about her postpartum depression. The brand had dropped her, she said, over a morals clause. She had discussed her struggles on “Live With Kelly and Michael” in 2015; the partnership ended within the year. “I was not gonna be invited back the next year,” she recalled, “and I had worked with those people for 10 years.”
It was the kind of clarity that often sounds, in retrospect, like a reckoning.
Panettiere built her career at an age when the industry was paying less attention to what it was doing to the people inside it. She began acting as a child and was 17 when “Heroes” premiered in 2006 on NBC, casting her as Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader whose body healed from every wound. She spent four seasons with that character and then moved to “Nashville,” where she played Juliette Barnes, a country star whose arc included addiction, postpartum depression, and public collapse. Panettiere was asked, in many interviews, whether those roles felt personal. She rarely said no.
In the years since “Nashville” ended, she spoke openly about her struggles. The entertainment industry she grew up in has since faced serious legal scrutiny over its treatment of young performers, with child actor lawsuits against major Hollywood studios drawing renewed attention to the pressures that young performers were asked to absorb. Her death at 36 came within days of another loss in American entertainment: the passing of Shelley Fabares at 82, whose decades in television defined a different era, but the same network.
What happened on August 16 in Greenville is not yet fully known. The dispatch audio’s reference to a possible overdose has not been corroborated by the coroner’s office, which has not announced a timeline for its ruling. The DEA’s jurisdiction typically covers controlled substance supply chains and distribution networks; no official has explained what the agency is examining here, or what it has found.
Klitschko had shared a separate tribute when Panettiere first died. His August 21 birthday post carried the same register, the same deliberate calm. It was written, unmistakably, for an audience that includes an eleven-year-old girl who will someday read it.
The investigation is open. The coroner has not ruled. What those two things will eventually reveal about the final months of Panettiere’s life is not yet known.
