Cavaliers Name 21-Man Spain Camp Roster as New Faces Compete to Answer the Knicks Question

CLEVELAND — The 21 names came out Wednesday, and none of them changed the question the Cleveland Cavaliers have been carrying since May.

Four games. Four losses. The New York Knicks swept the Cavaliers out of the Eastern Conference finals without a response, and by the time Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs for the championship, Cleveland’s offseason had become about something harder than personnel: whether the team that arrived in May with the best record in the East broke at the wrong moment, or whether the Knicks simply found a structural ceiling that will not be fixed with one new contract or one new wing.

That question travels to Spain. The official 21-man camp roster released Wednesday sends Kenny Atkinson’s group to Andalusia beginning September 30, with practice sessions at The Embassy facility in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol and a public scrimmage at Martín Carpena Arena in Málaga on October 5, according to Yahoo Sports. Media Day is September 28 in Cleveland; the team departs the following morning.

The core is intact. Donovan Mitchell returns after signing a four-year extension worth $273 million, the highest per-year average in NBA history, a decision that made his commitment to Cleveland the loudest possible statement an offseason can offer. Evan Mobley is back, his 24-point performance in the Game 4 loss to New York the last data point before the summer began. Jarrett Allen rounds out the frontcourt. Harden’s three-year, $97 million commitment to the organization brings him to Málaga carrying one of the harder questions in the East: can a 37-year-old point guard, however skilled, sustain an elite level across the six weeks that actually decide a season?

The new face with the most clearly defined role is Peyton Watson. He spent four seasons in Denver becoming one of the more versatile wing defenders in the Western Conference, a 6-foot-8 player capable of switching across multiple positions without costing the Nuggets their defensive structure. Atkinson wanted that profile: someone who can guard the league’s best ball-handlers without demanding the ball at the other end. Whether Watson gives the Cavaliers the defensive wing they lacked when OG Anunoby made Mitchell’s life difficult in the ECF is what his first weeks in Spain are designed to determine. Mario Hezonja joins the roster as a veteran frontcourt presence capable of providing capable minutes without requiring a defined role.

The three two-way players, Tristan Enaruna, Riley Minix, and Ernest Udeh Jr., arrive with a narrower mandate. Their primary function in Spain is to push the players above them. Udeh is the most intriguing of the three: a physical center with unfinished offensive tools who spent two seasons developing in the G League and arrives with enough potential that multiple teams looked before Cleveland committed. The two-way designation does not guarantee anything beyond a camp invitation, but for a center with Udeh’s frame, it is more than most players his age receive.

Four camp invitees round out the 21-man group. Kadary Richmond is the name most likely to earn something real from this trip, a combo guard with genuine ball-creation ability who has built a professional record in the G League and overseas that warrants consideration. Curtis Jones, Zack Austin, and Rashaun Agee represent fringe candidacies, players who will be measured in Málaga on conditioning, response to coaching, and whether any of them does something the staff did not expect.

While Dallas and Houston open their 2026-27 camps in Macao, the Cavaliers will be the only team practicing in Europe when camp officially opens next week. It is a logistical choice and a tone-setting one simultaneously. Spain puts the group in tighter quarters for longer, removes the familiar routine, and ensures the Málaga scrimmage carries stakes that most first-week games do not. Whether any of that matters by May depends on answers the roster cannot provide in September.

Atkinson spoke carefully through the offseason. He did not promise a correction to what happened in New York. He described a process: a team that had the league’s best record through March and ran into a Knicks group playing basketball at a level no one in the East could match for eight consecutive games. That is not necessarily a structural failure. It may simply be what happens when you face the right team at the right time four times in a row.

That is also, as anyone in Cleveland will tell you, exactly what you say when you have not figured out how to fix it.

The East has not stopped moving. Kawhi Leonard committed to Toronto this week with a contract that makes the Raptors a genuine factor again. The Celtics are in camp. The question the Knicks put to Cleveland in May is not going to age gently.
