Taylor Swift’s ‘Showgirl’ Encore Drops Tonight With ‘Patient Zero’ Video

LOS ANGELES — The record had already been set. The biggest first week an album had ever produced, by the label’s account. The streaming counters had peaked, the presales confirmed, the Billboard tallies filed. And then Taylor Swift went back to the studio.

That is the circumstance behind The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which arrives at midnight ET tonight, Friday September 25, as a four-track addition to her 2025 album. Swift announced the Encore on Thursday through her social media channels, describing the sessions as something she and producers Max Martin and Shellback had not expected to release. “Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in,” she said, “but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs.” The Hollywood Reporter reported the announcement Thursday morning.

The four songs, “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon,” were composed in Sweden in the immediate aftermath of The Life of a Showgirl‘s release in October 2025, when Republic Records reported the album had produced the most-streamed first week in the format’s history. Their inclusion in an Encore edition, nearly a year later, makes them unusual in the pop economy: songs written not to be released but to mark a moment, then released anyway.

“Patient Zero” arrives first with a music video directed by Swift and shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. The teaser released this week offers glimpses of a cemetery, rushing water, and Swift in tears, alongside Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The casting is unexpected. Farrell and Johnson occupy different parts of the entertainment landscape from the typical Swift video collaborator, and the atmosphere of the clip, formally composed, rain-soaked, closer in register to a short film than a pop promo, reflects the artistic claims Swift has been staking with growing directness.

That argument gets its most formal statement this Sunday. The “Patient Zero” video will have its world premiere at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, broadcast live on CBS at 7:30 p.m. ET. At the same ceremony, Swift will be presented with the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a category MTV created this year for artists who direct their own visual work. It is the first new honor the VMAs have introduced in several award cycles. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the premiere and the award Thursday.

The directing credit on “Patient Zero” follows a body of work Swift has been building since the Eras Tour concert film. That project, a direct-to-cinema release, required every decision conventionally belonging to a director: framing, pacing, the structure of the setlist as a visual argument. At the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards, where Swift collected seven prizes, Best Music Video went to “The Fate of Ophelia,” the lead single from Showgirl. The Encore represents the next step: Lubezki as cinematographer, Farrell and Johnson as leads, a teaser that asks to be read rather than simply watched.

The VMAs on Sunday will feature a George Michael tribute, Madonna’s first VMAs performance in 23 years, and the Video Vanguard Award going to Nirvana. The evening is structured to carry weight. Swift enters the ceremony among the most-nominated artists in this year’s competition. The “Patient Zero” premiere will be, by the structure of the broadcast, one of its most anticipated moments.

The three remaining tracks on the Encore, “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon,” have been announced but not yet heard outside Swift’s inner circle. No advance streams circulated; no preview audio accompanied Thursday’s announcement. What is known is that all four songs came from the same Swedish sessions, making the Encore a document of a specific week rather than a conventional album cycle. Swift and Travis Kelce married at Madison Square Garden this past July. Whether the songs’ titles, a city in Ohio, a meteorological state, an ancient capital, have anything to say about the months between that week in Sweden and this week’s release is not yet clear.

That is the honest limit of what can be said tonight. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore releases at midnight. The “Patient Zero” video premieres Sunday at the Peacock Theatre. Three of the four songs are still, for everyone outside the studio, entirely unknown. What they contain, their structure, their temperature, what they say about the year that made them, will be audible in a matter of hours.
