MEDINAH, Ill. – Missouri’s seven-under second round erased Illinois’ early advantage and left three teams sharing the lead at the Illini Women’s Invitational. Missouri, Indiana and host Illinois each finished Monday’s 36 holes at 16-under 560 on Medinah Country Club’s Course No. 2.

The three co-leaders enter Tuesday’s final round four strokes ahead of Ole Miss in the 15-team field. The closing round is scheduled for a 9 a.m. Central shotgun start on October 13. These are opening-day standings, not the tournament’s final results.

Illinois set the pace with an 11-under 277, the lowest opening-round score in the field, then followed with a five-under 283. Indiana carded rounds of 278 and 282. Missouri opened with a nine-under 279 before matching Ole Miss for the lowest second-round score, a seven-under 281.

The Illinois athletics report identified Sofia Vargas as the hosts’ leading player. She shot consecutive five-under 67s to reach 10-under 134, three strokes behind individual leader Mariana Mesones of Minnesota.

Vargas’ consistency put Illinois in position to challenge on both leaderboards. The team led the field in par-five scoring with a 4.70 average and shared the par-four lead with Maryland at 3.90. Illinois also recorded two eagles, 124 pars and only 19 bogeys, while its 33 birdies ranked third.

Missouri’s climb depended on a balanced lineup rather than a player at the very top of the individual standings. The Tigers’ official recap reported three players tied for eighth at five under. Missouri heads into the final round with an opportunity to claim its second team championship of the season.

Indiana reached the same total with an opening ten-under round and a six-under second round. The Hoosiers’ tournament preview lists the event as a 54-hole competition on a par-72, 6,166-yard course. Only 18 holes remain to separate the three leaders.

Ole Miss remains close enough to disrupt that race. Its rounds of 283 and 281 produced a 12-under 564, with four players inside the individual top 20. Mary Miller led the Rebels at eight-under 136 and stood fourth individually, five strokes behind Mesones, according to the Ole Miss recap.

Minnesota’s Mesones’ 13-under total gives her the individual advantage over Vargas. Iowa’s Eva Kristinsdottir stood third, four strokes off the lead, after breaking her program’s 36-hole scoring record and tying its 18-hole record during Monday’s play.

The leaders arrived at 560 by different routes: Illinois built the strongest opening round, Missouri gained ground in the afternoon, and Indiana kept both rounds comfortably under par. With Ole Miss four shots back, the final round offers more than a three-team contest, but the advantage belongs to the schools tied at the top.
