Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have released a remix of Rodrigo’s “Expectations” with a retro music video in which the two compete on game shows hosted by David Byrne.
The song arrived Thursday, October 15, with its video, ABC News reported. Rodrigo confirmed on October 13 that the track would be her first remix, with Roan, who opened both her Sour and Guts tours, joining the song.
“Expectations” comes from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, Rodrigo’s third album, which sent “Drop Dead” straight to No. 1 when it arrived in June.
Pitchfork reported that Rodrigo called on her former tour opener to help remix the song, one of the album’s standout tracks. Variety described the clip as a retro video in which the pair appear on vintage game shows, with appearances from Byrne and producer Dan Nigro. Rodrigo said she felt “so lucky” to work with Roan and Byrne on the video.
The release comes as Roan prepares to host The Super Graphic Spectacular, a two-night charity event in Los Angeles later this month. Lola Young, Tinashe, Caroline Polachek and MUNA are on the bill, The Hollywood Reporter reported, and the event supports her nonprofit, the Midwest Princess Project.
Critics have embraced the album’s shift from pop-punk to new wave, and the remix gives the record another high-profile release as Rodrigo continues to promote it.
