Peace with Azerbaijan is possible if Armenia abandons Karabakh

April 18, 2023

Achieving peace in Transcaucasia is possible if Armenia is recognized as part of the Armenian SSR and if Yerevan has no territorial claims on other countries. This assumption was made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a speech in parliament, transmits Sputnik Armenia.

“Peace is possible if we make it clear in all our international relations not only today, but also for the future, that we recognize the territory of the Republic of Armenia with an area of 29.8 thousand square km. , or rather the territory of the Armenian SSR, within which we gained independence in 1991, and that we have and will never have territorial requirements for any of the countries,” he said. declared.

Nagorno-Karabakh was not part of the Armenian SSR.

Pashinyan clarified that by achieving peace, he means the normalization of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. According to him, Baku and Yerevan will be able to conclude a peace treaty if “the two countries clearly, without ambiguities or pitfalls recognize” the territorial integrity of the other and agree that they will not make corresponding claims in the future.

“I confirm that the Republic of Armenia fully recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and we expect Azerbaijan to do the same by recognizing the territory of the Armenian SSR as the Republic of Armenia “, noted Prime Minister.

At the same time, Pashinyan said the issue of relations with Azerbaijan is “much more complicated”. According to him, “after the 44-day war”, the neighboring country “is in euphoria and wants to take a lot, and if possible, take everything”.

“Azerbaijan has directly or indirectly become an energy or logistics hub, and its importance has increased both for Russia and for some Western countries,” Pashinyan said.
