Afghanistan seeks trump’s help to access $9 billion in frozen assets

Taliban Politburo Chief: Afghanistan Expects US to Unblock Assets

Afghanistan hopes that the United States will unblock its assets during the rule of Donald Trump, the head of the political bureau of the Taliban movement in Qatar, Suhail Shaheen, said.

“We want the assets of the Bank of Afghanistan to be unfrozen because a large part of them belong to ordinary people. They invested their money in private banks, private banks deposited it in the Bank of Afghanistan, and the Bank of Afghanistan transferred it to New York,” Shaheen said.

According to Shaheen, Afghan citizens initially opened accounts in private banks. However, these financial institutions transferred the funds they received from the people to the Central Bank of Afghanistan, which transferred the money to the United States.

When the Taliban came to power in the country, the American leadership froze most of the country’s assets. The reserves of the Central Bank of Afghanistan, which total $9 billion, were blocked.

At the same time, Shahin emphasized that Kabul will seek the unfreezing of assets from Washington through “positive influence.” The head of the political bureau did not specify what exactly he was talking about. According to SaputnikGlobe.
