Both words carry a B in position four: D-E-R-B-Y and L-I-M-B-O. The moment you confirm a B on one board it belongs in the same square on the other. A solver who finds it early on DERBY but approaches LIMBO as a separate problem will often misplace it and burn a guess.
The habit worth building is tracking letter positions across all four boards at once rather than working them in sequence. When a letter greens somewhere, check whether any other open board still has that slot available.
GAWKY Is the Board That Will Cost You
G-A-W-K-Y contains W and K, two of the least common letters in five-letter English. Most standard openers – SLATE, CRANE, RAISE – do not touch either. The A is the only foothold a common starter gives you, and a yellow A in position two tells you almost nothing about the word’s shape.
GAWKY also ends in Y, as does DERBY, so a solver who eliminates Y on one board carries wrong information to the other.
The practical fix is to dedicate a guess around turns four or five to a word built around W and K: WOKEN covers both uncommon letters and also hands you the O from LIMBO. KAYAK works too if you have already confirmed A but not K.
Where the Nine Guesses Go
SLATE is stronger than CRANE today. It greens the L in LIMBO on guess one rather than returning a blank, and it finds the E in both DERBY and REIGN as a yellow. Start there. Follow with something containing B – CABIN or AMBER – to confirm the shared B in four. Save a mid-game guess for W and K. DERBY and REIGN share an E in position two, so once you green it on one board, the other is already half-set.
What cannot be planned is the order your boards resolve. Work the E-in-two connection to bridge DERBY and REIGN, and do not leave GAWKY untouched into your final guesses without having confirmed W and K first.
