Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Brazil exceeds 15,000 deaths from coronavirus and is the fourth country with the most cases

Brazil this Saturday exceeded 15,000 deaths from the new coronavirus and 230,000 infected, which make it the fourth country with the highest number of coronavirus cases, by overtaking Spain and Italy.

With 15,633 deaths and 233,142 confirmed cases, Brazil is the Latin American country most affected by the virus, which has already claimed almost 310,000 lives worldwide.

According to the Johns Hopkins University ranking, only the United Kingdom (241,455 infected), Russia (272,043) and the United States (1,450,269) have more confirmed cases of the virus than Brazil.

Meanwhile, after confirming the positive of the public official, Vice President Hamilton Mourão, 66, and his wife, Paula Mourão, underwent a Covid-19 test, although the result would only be on Monday, and they were left in isolation. According to an official statement released in the Brazilian media, Mourão was with the official last Wednesday

“The vice president will not work next Monday, May 18, waiting for the results of the tests, scheduled for that day,” the government reported.

Mourão’s confinement occurred at the same time that President Jair Bolsonaro again attacked the quarantine measures ordered by local governments, and hours after the resignation of Health Minister Nelson Teich, who lasted less than a month in office.

“Unemployment, hunger, and misery will be the future of those who support the tyranny of total isolation,” the far-right president tweeted.

Brazil, with 218,223 infections, is the sixth country with the most cases of Covid-19 in the world, while the registered deaths amount to 14,817. The number of cases could be up to 15 times higher, since the tests were not generalized, according to experts.

Bolsonaro advocates the “return to normality” with economic arguments, and promotes the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of the disease.
