Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received France’s highest honorary distinction.
But there is a problem: Russian President Vladimir Putin has the same price.
French President Emmanuel Macron presented Zelenskyyy with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor after their meeting at the presidential palace on Thursday.
Macron said the move was a “massive” recognition of Ukraine’s prowess in the aftermath of the Russian invasion.
Some French lawmakers and activists have called on Macron to strip Putin of his war-related award.
Macron has not ruled out depriving Putin of the order, which was awarded to him by President Jacques Chirac in 2006.
Macron told reporters on Friday that such a decision “is of serious importance and must be taken at the right time.”
He noted that he had already made decisions on the deprivation of this award.
