French civil aviation requests the cancellation of flights due to protests over the amendment of the pension system

March 24, 2023

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in France asked airlines to cancel 33% of their flights the day after tomorrow (Sunday) and 20% of their flights next Monday at Paris Orly airport, due to a strike by air traffic controllers protesting the amendment of the retirement system. And the French News Agency stated that the precautionary cancellation measures also include 20% of flights / Sundays / at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport and Marseille Provence Airport, and companies were also asked to cancel 20% of their flights on Monday from this last airport. These measures come in line with the number of air traffic controllers working and to avoid greater confusion, as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had previously asked companies to cancel 30% of their flights scheduled for today (Friday) and 15% of their flights tomorrow (Saturday) at Orly Airport. The strikes are reflected in the entire air traffic in Europe, with a delay recorded today (Friday) in most major French airports for a period of less than half an hour, whether for departing or arriving flights. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanan announced today the arrest of 457 people and the injury of 441 police officers during protests on Thursday in France over pension reform. The popular and trade union protests in France come in response to the amendment of the retirement system, which stipulates raising the retirement age from two years to 64.
