McDonald’s Corp. is closing its U.S. offices for a week beginning April 3 as it prepares to notify company employees of the layoffs. On this subject said in a management letter to employees, available from The Wall Street Journal.
“During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions regarding roles and staffing levels within the organization,” the company said.
Company management has also advised employees to cancel all face-to-face meetings with suppliers and other events at McDonald’s offices.
At the beginning of January, the management of the company reported on “tough decisions” related to the number of employees. McDonald’s did not specify how many people would be laid off. In total, the company employs about 150,000 employees, 70% of them – in the United States.
Over the past six months, several major US companies have announced cuts. This was preceded by slowing revenue growth amid a sluggish global economy and massive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Meta* in November 2022 announced the layoff of 11,000 employees, which was the largest workforce reduction in the IT giant’s 18-year history. At the same time, Elon Musk cut about 50% of Twitter employees. Mass layoffs have also been reported by Google, Microsoft and Netflix. Amazon announced on March 21 that it would cut 9,000 jobs in the coming weeks.
