Meaningful dialogue with Ukraine on NATO membership is possible only after it has secured its sovereignty. This was stated by the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg.
“NATO’s position on Ukraine’s membership is unchanged, it will become a member of the alliance, as has been said more than once at the summits. But we all understand that for meaningful progress on this issue, the first step is to preserve Ukraine as an independent nation,” Stoltenberg said.
However, he declined to answer when asked whether alliance leaders would discuss Ukraine’s membership at a summit this summer.
According to the Financial Times, NATO admitted that it had so far ignored Ukraine’s application to join the alliance and could not offer the country membership in the near future.
