Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko believes that all nuclear weapons in the world must be destroyed.
“Nuclear weapons must be collected and destroyed, that’s all. In the meantime, we are doing like them (the United States – editor’s note)”, declared the Belarusian leader in an interview granted to Pavel Zarubin for the program “Moscow. Kremlin. Cheese fries.”
This is how Lukashenko commented on Emmanuel Macron’s statement. The French president, in a joint press conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping, said that “no country, under any circumstances, can deploy nuclear weapons on foreign territory”.
“I agree with him. Therefore, it is necessary to remove nuclear weapons from Americans in five or six countries where they are located,” the Belarusian president said.
This is not the first time that Lukashenka has spoken of the total elimination of nuclear weapons. For example, in an interview with AFP in 2022, he describes himself as a fierce opponent of nuclear weapons.
“It must be completely destroyed in the world. And the world will be calmer to fall. But there are now, in addition to nuclear weapons, biological and cybernetic weapons. You see, it’s even worse than nuclear,” he said.
Russian President’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on April 6 that the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus was a reaction to NATO’s expansion towards Russian borders. Vladimir Putin has previously indicated that the United States is stockpiling 200 tactical nuclear munitions in six NATO countries. Alexander Lukashenko also said that NATO is conducting exercises, including with the use of aircraft capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
