Tunisia plans to join BRICS

April 9, 2023

The Tunisian authorities are currently studying the possibility of joining the BRICS. This was stated by the representative of the pro-presidential “July 25 Movement” Mahmoud bin Mabrouk.

“This is being considered with other possibilities, and it is not excluded,” said Mahmoud bin Mabrouk, quoted by RIA Novosti.

Previously, President Qais Said had refused aid from the International Monetary Fund amounting to $1.9 billion. According to him, Tunisia for the loan will not follow the “dictatorship” of the IMF.

Qais Said said the fund demanded cuts in budget subsidies for food and energy. Also, according to the conditions of the IMF, it was necessary to reduce the salaries of civil servants.

Recall that last June, Iran and Argentina asked to join the BRICS. The Algerian president also announced that he was ready to join the association.
