Today, April 11, is the International Day for the Liberation of Prisoners from Nazi Concentration Camps. As part of the memorable date in Orel, red carnations and roses were laid at the obelisk of the Fraternal Cemetery of the Victims of Fascism as a sign of eternal memory. The city administration told more about the ceremony on its official VKontakte page.
The fraternal cemetery is located near the northeast wall of the former Orel prison camp, between Oktyabrskaya and Krasnoarmeyskaya streets. 5,000 Soviet prisoners of war and civilians who died during the Nazi occupation of the Orel region are buried there. Today there was a meeting of representatives of different generations. All paid tribute to the history of their country.
Merab Dokhnadze, head of the Soviet district territorial administration, attended the laying ceremony. In his speech, he addressed the younger generation, urging them to remember memorable dates and events in the history of the Fatherland, so that they can then pass this memory on to their children.
“You follow us and today it is very important for our country. Thank you for being here with us today,” concluded Merab Dokhnadze.
