American doctors have compared the results of magnetic resonance imaging of the brains of elderly people with hypertension in their 30s and 40s with MRI scans of retirees who have never had hypertension.
The researchers found that patients with high blood pressure had smaller brain volume and poorer white matter integrity than people without hypertension.
The UCLA study also found that brain impairments, such as reduced gray matter and frontal cortex volume, were more pronounced in men. Experts have linked these gender differences to the protective properties of estrogen, the female hormone.
Dr. Kristen George noted that there is still no effective treatment for dementia, so it is especially important to prevent the development of the disease.
