Tokyo’s stance on Russia’s “illegal occupation” of the Kuril Islands in the Kremlin is seen as unacceptable. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, noting that the Kurils are an integral part of Russia.
“We do not accept such a formulation of the question and such formulations. The Kurils are an integral part of the Russian Federation,” Peskov told reporters.
Recall that in the annual report of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published in early April, it is stated that Tokyo considers the southern part of the Kuril Islands as “original Japanese territories under the illegal occupation of Russia”. The document notes that the issue of ownership of these territories is the most difficult issue in relations between Japan and Russia.
Earlier it became known that China, for the first time in nearly 60 years, changed its mind about ownership of the Kuril Islands. In 1964, Mao Zedong expressed his support for Japan on the issue of ownership of the islands, but now Beijing has taken a neutral stance on this issue.
