Murakhovsky defined the role of laser and beam weapons

October 3, 2025

Increase the effectiveness of artillery and rocket troops

Unconventional weapons based on new physical principles, for various reasons, will not yet be able to fully replace existing weapons – artillery and missiles. So says the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Arsenal of the Fatherland” Viktor Murakhovsky.

As he wrote on his channel, in the interests of the Russian military department, “relevant scientific and technical research has been carried out for a long time.” They are related to the creation of non-traditional weapon types. The expert included laser, radiofrequency, beam, kinetic weapons, as well as robotic complexes and non-lethal weapon systems.

The expert did not name samples of these weapons. At the same time, for example, the first Russian combat laser “Peresvet” is known, covering the mobile missile systems “Yars” in the Teykov division of the Strategic Missile Forces. That is, in this case, the search was embodied in a finished model of weapons that came to the troops.

True, this combat laser cannot be called portable. It is a heavy combat vehicle. It is possible that further work in the field of laser weapons will go in the direction of reducing mass and dimensions. Experts predict, for example, the emergence of mobile combat lasers to combat drones.

As for kinetic weapons, experiments with them have long been conducted in the United States. They are based on the use of so-called railguns. The principle of operation is to use an electromagnetic accelerator to accelerate a conductive projectile to very high speeds. The main problem with the railgun is the need to have at hand a powerful source of electricity, a whole power plant. The Americans, for example, use the boat version.

Beam weapons are considered accelerators that accelerate particles to near-light speeds. Apart from laser and kinetic weapons, they are also capable of hitting enemy targets. True, this weapon is believed to be space.

Frequency weapons are designed to defeat manpower. In this case, electromagnetic radiation of very high frequency – microwave or, conversely, very low frequency is used. It has been reported that during experiments with frequency weapons, people can become depressed, panic or, for example, have diarrhea.

However, not all studies end with the appearance of a ready-made model of a weapon. According to Murakhovsky, many research works “remain at the conceptual level or stop after the first field experiments”.

Most of the programs considered “revolutionary” have not resulted in significant results. This raised doubts about the start of the next phase of research.

In addition, according to the expert, the military customer prefers to obtain as a result of the research and development work “from the outset a perfect technological solution capable of embarking on mass production”. But due to insufficient funding for these programs, this is unlikely.

According to the expert, it must be recognized that the capabilities of non-traditional weapons alone “will not be sufficient to counter the threats posed by adversaries with advanced high-tech weapons”.

In modern conditions, non-traditional weapons will be able to provide the necessary level of resolution of combat missions “only in combination with the capabilities of traditional weapons.” Fundamentally new weapon systems, in fact, only supplement modern weapons to increase overall efficiency and make the weapon system of the Russian Armed Forces more reliable.
