Innovative solutions prevented the emission of 9 thousand tons of carbon during the World Cup

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy announced that relying on the national electricity grid to provide the energy needed for temporary facilities in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums and surrounding areas, instead of using diesel electricity generators, has prevented the emission of nearly 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide during The days of the tournament hosted by Qatar at the end of last year.

The Supreme Committee referred to the implementation of these innovative solutions in seven of the World Cup stadiums, in cooperation with the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), noting that this procedure led to the provision of more than 5 million liters of diesel.

Eng. Yasser Abdullah Al-Jamal, Director General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said:" By working closely with our partners, we were able to provide innovative solutions that helped us fulfill our commitments towards sustainability and preserving the environment, represented in reducing dependence on diesel generators at the tournament sites, which led to improved air quality, reduced noise levels, and reduced carbon emissions, as well as Reducing the need to transport and store large quantities of fuel. We have managed to achieve all of these benefits while providing a reliable source of energy for the duration of the tournament".

The Supreme Committee had cooperated with both the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and FIFA to study the results of experimental sporting events hosted by the country over the past years in preparation for the World Cup, including the Club World Cup and the Arab Cup. The study concluded that the national electricity grid is the most suitable option. Feasibility to reduce dependence on diesel generators.

In order to achieve this goal, 44 substations were constructed at the tournament sites, to provide 49,000 kVA of electric power. As usual, it required the use of 185 generators to operate the stadiums and the surrounding facilities, but this number decreased to 70 thanks to the reliance on the national grid, which led to the provision of 82 percent of the tournament’s energy needs directly through the national electricity grid.

For his part, His Excellency Eng. Issa bin Hilal Al-Kuwari, Chairman of the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), said: "We have started coordinating and working closely with the Supreme Committee in the early stages to study the status of the infrastructure and the procedures required to increase its ability to provide energy. We have also developed a plan to activate new stations and lay cables in places that need additional service infrastructure. Thus, we presented feasible solutions, the results of which were not limited to environmental benefits, but also proved to be effective in terms of material cost as well.

The importance of these solutions stems from the fact that they give the State of Qatar an important legacy, which will enable us to continue supplying stadiums with energy through a reliable main electricity grid, instead of using temporary generators in sporting events in the future.".

For her part, Eng. Bodour Al-Meer, Executive Director of the Sustainability Department of the Supreme Committee, confirmed that this step comes as part of the Supreme Committee’s commitment to promoting sustainability practices and preserving the environment. She said:" Sustainability has always been a top priority for Qatar since winning the right to host the tournament. Our sustainability strategy has placed temporary energy solutions with low environmental impact among our main areas of focus. The great success achieved by the project testifies to the tremendous efforts made by the work teams in order to leave a sustainable legacy for future generations".
