Scientists have discovered which diet can lead to diabetes

October 3, 2025

A new study has shown that approximately 14 million cases of diabetes are associated with malnutrition. Doctors told how to prevent the development of a dangerous disease.

Diets that lack whole grains or contain too much refined rice, wheat, or processed meats are linked to the development of diabetes. The results of the study appeared in the pages of the journal Nature Medicine.

Type 2 diabetes has also been identified in people who regularly drank fruit juice and did not eat enough non-starchy vegetables, nuts or seeds, according to the New York Post.

Scientists from Tufts University analyzed diets from 184 countries using data from 1990 and 2018. Experts found that more than 70% of new diagnoses in 2018 were due to unhealthy diets.

There is no cure for diabetes, but there are many lifestyle changes recommended to help manage the disease, such as weight loss, exercise, and good nutrition.

Central, Eastern Europe and Central Asia have the highest rates of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers noted that this is likely due to data from Poland and Russia, where locals consume large amounts of red and processed meat and potatoes.
