The Nizhny Novgorod City Duma Urban Services Commission recognized 80% of Nizhny Novgorod’s bomb shelters as unusable and unable to accommodate more than one million citizens.
Even after the repair, there will be enough places in the shelters for only 190,000 residents of Nizhny Novgorod with a population of 1.25 million people. The rest is proposed to be placed in basements and cellars. 915,000 people will be able to be accommodated in basements under apartment buildings, of which 2,200 are ready. Another 150,000 people are expected to be housed in cellars and basements of private sector houses.
The deputies intend to approach the city administration with a proposal to finance the preparation of the shelters as a priority.
