Kolkata. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal Police to file by May 2 the progress report related to the investigation into the unnatural death of a minor girl at Kaliyaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district. Violent protests had taken place earlier this week over the matter.
The court also directed the state government to hand over copies of the FIR along with the post-mortem and investigation reports of the case to the girl’s father. The court gave the direction after the girl’s father sought transfer of the probe into the death to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court also directed that the videography of the post-mortem of the child be properly preserved.
Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed the state police to file a progress report on the investigation into the incident by May 2, the next date of hearing. Petitioner’s counsel Krishnendu Bhattacharya claimed that the girl was sexually assaulted and strangled to death. Bhattacharya requested that the investigation be transferred to the CBI, as the girl’s parents do not have faith in the investigation by the state authorities.
The counsel appearing for the state government said that the 17-year-old girl was reported missing on April 20 and her body was found a day later near a pond. The state’s counsel said that according to the post-mortem report, no mark of sexual assault was found on her body. Violent protests took place in Kaliaganj on April 25 against this incident.
