Bill introduced in Michigan for holiday on Diwali and Eid

New York: Three legislators, including an Indian-American, have introduced a bill in the Michigan State House to declare festivals like Diwali and Eid as official holidays. Led by House Leader Abraham Ayshe and state representatives Ranjiv Puri and Sharon McDonnell, Michigan introduced legislation to make Diwali, Baisakhi, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the Lunar New Year official holidays. Puri said that celebrating our cultural diversity is the cornerstone of a vibrant and inclusive society. By recognizing these holidays, we are not only showing our respect and appreciation for the traditions and beliefs of our fellow Michiganders, but we are also sending a powerful message of inclusion.

A statement released by Michigan House Democrats said Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance, and Vaisakhi is a spring harvest festival celebrated by both Hindus and Sikhs. Introducing the bills, Ayesh said, “These bills embrace the diverse fabric of our state by recognizing various religious and cultural holidays.” Making these holidays official state holidays will let Michigan’s many communities know they have a place in our great state and deserve to celebrate their joyous occasions like everyone else.

Currently, there are 12 officially recognized holidays in Michigan. According to the Indian American influence, about 900,000 Asian Americans live in Michigan, with Indian-Americans making up the majority. Recently, Pennsylvania declared Diwali as a national holiday.
