La Presse news agency reported that the man punched Conte in the face and that law enforcement immediately arrested the attacker.
Conte said in a statement: “The opposition is legitimate, but these violent protests deviate from the democratic context.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her solidarity with Conte, whose party belongs to the opposition, and condemned “all forms of violence”.
Conte was prime minister when Italy became the first Western country to confirm cases of COVID-19 in February 2020, putting the country under strict lockdown in early March and overseeing the start of Italy’s vaccination campaign.
