Pakistani media also wrote about the detention of more than 1.9 thousand protesters during clashes with law enforcement agencies across the country.
In response to the rallies, Pakistani authorities ordered the deployment of army units to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, as well as to Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, where the most violent protests are taking place.
Protests in cities across Pakistan began on the evening of Tuesday May 9, following the arrest of former prime minister, leader of the opposition Tehreek-e-Insaf party, Imran Khan. According to investigators, he, together with his wife and his party leaders, founded a trust to create “Al-Qadeer University”. By their actions, they have damaged the budget of Pakistan by 50 billion rupees.
On Wednesday, the court arrested Khan for eight days. Besides the former prime minister, police arrested Tehrik-e-Insaf deputy prime ministers Fawad Chaudhry and Shah Mahmoud Qureshi, as well as party general secretary Asad Umar.
