The pair also diverged, in their interview with Sky News Arabia, from the current situation on the ground.

After a month of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, the commander of the army, Abd al-Fattah al-Burhan, decided to relieve a number of leaders of the state apparatus from their positions , including the director general of the police force, Anan Omar, and entrusting Khaled Mohieldin with his duties.

The move came a day after his decision to freeze the bank accounts of the Rapid Support Forces and its affiliates.

What’s behind the dismissal of the police chief?

Rapid Support Forces political adviser Youssef Ezzat protested the changes to the police leadership saying:

“The Sudanese police have been subjected to a process of extortion trying to bring them into battle alongside the army.” “The acting deputy police chief refused to include him in military operations, then he died in mysterious circumstances and his body was not returned to his family.” “Most of the police and staff have been absent from their daily work since the start of the war.” “The police chief who was removed from his post is currently outside Sudan.” “The new police chief is loyal to the National Congress Party and the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir.” “For our part, we have appealed to the police to refer them to the service centers and help with the security check, but we refuse to involve the police in the military action.” “Police involvement in the circle of conflict will cause no change in the scene on the ground.”

Preparations for the next step

On the other hand, the military and strategic expert, the former general-major of the army Amin Majzoub, confirms that the dismissal of the chief of police “came with the aim of rehabilitating and equipping the police force “, for what he calls the “next step”.

He monitors the causes and purposes of these changes, saying:

“The current stage of clashes is heading towards the end.” “The Sudanese army is currently in the process of driving out the Rapid Support Forces and unruly gangs, and clearing the capital.” “There are demands from the police in the coming period, such as securing markets, residential areas, banks and citizens, and preventing the spread of organized crime from gangs. unruly.”

On the other hand, Ezzat calls the decision to freeze Rapid Support Forces accounts “shameful in form and content”, referring to:

“It is not possible to stop the payment of the salary of any person, soldier or employee, except by court order, and in accordance with the law.” “Al-Burhan issued a decision on behalf of the Sovereign Council, but the council has not met for over a month and a half.” “Al-Burhan does not realize the real reality, because the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Sudan, as well as all banks, are under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.”

On the other hand, Majzoub explains the legal and administrative freezing of Rapid Support accounts by saying:

“When an institution, whether legal or on the ground, is dissolved, there will be administrative actions as a result of that decision, such as closing accounts, closing budgets and preventing withdrawals.” “I am awaiting forthcoming decisions following previous procedures, to dismiss the retired detached Rapid Support Forces Armed Forces officers.”

new players

The political adviser to the commander of the Rapid Support Forces confirms that the battle “still continues between the two camps”, explaining that “the army is intensifying its air strikes, but that it is not present on the ground, so that the Rapid Support Forces will expand north and east after fully securing Khartoum.”

Majzoub replies that “the army has won the battle, and it has the upper hand in Khartoum and in the Sudanese cities and states”.

According to the military expert, “after the ceasefire, there will be a new form of state, and there will be new actors in the political arena, and perhaps new actors in regional alliances and international”.
