NSW Police confirmed on Friday that an investigation into the incident was ongoing and that the senior officer involved was being examined and was no longer serving.
Police initially released few details of the incident, saying only that an elderly woman at the nursing home had been injured, not mentioning the use of an electric shock.
She said officers tried to dissuade the elderly woman, who has dementia, after she carried a knife and approached them.
The use of force against Claire has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for an independent investigation.
Civil liberties groups have called on an outside watchdog, such as the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, to lead the investigation, rather than the NSW Police Serious Incident Team.
“The police should never investigate the police,” said Josh Ballas, chairman of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties.
Nicole Lee, president of People with Disabilities Australia, called the incident shocking and said it highlighted the lack of police training in de-escalation cases involving people with dementia.
