During the meeting between Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor, leaders of the Turkish championship on Thursday evening, the dean of Turkish players, Samit Akaydin, spat on the player of Trabzonspor, Trezeguet, while the latter bowed down celebrating his goal.
The “shocking” incident sparked controversy in Turkey, with the majority of the public decrying Akaydin’s “unwarranted” behavior.
Strict club response
For its part, the Turkish Trabzonspor published a press release on Saturday denouncing what has happened since Samet Akaydin.
“It’s disgusting,” Trabzon said on his official account on the social networking site “Twitter.”
And he continued: “We strongly condemn the inhumane act against our player Trezeguet during the match we played with Fenerbahçe on May 18, 2023.”
“It’s shameful and disgusting that footballer Samet Akaidin spat on our player Trezeguet as he bowed down after celebrating his goal.”
“We expect all stakeholders, the Turkish Football Federation and especially Fenerbahçe, to take immediate action.”
He added: “We call on the whole sporting community to come together and reject such aggressive behavior and protect the true values of football so that sport can be rebuilt on the basis of friendship, love and respect.”
Trezeguet had scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute and the game ended in a 1-3 loss to Fenerbahçe.
