Biden agreed to train Ukrainians on F-16s

October 2, 2025

The two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss Biden’s private conversations with allies, said the US president announced he had approved the training, which is expected to take place in Europe in the coming months. .

They added that it was done at a meeting of G7 leaders in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, where the leaders also announced new sanctions against Moscow before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined them at the summit on Sunday.

Biden told commanders that decisions about when, how many and who will provide the fourth-generation fighter jets to Ukraine for combat use are expected to be made in the coming months during the training.

Zelenskyy has always called on Western fighter jets to strengthen his country’s defenses against the 15-month-old Russian offensive, but he has so far faced hesitation from the United States.

Under export licensing regulations, the United States must approve any Allied effort to train Ukrainian pilots.

European allies have warmed in recent weeks to the idea of sending fighter jets to Ukraine, as have Biden administration officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who has established himself as an ardent defender of the idea within the administration.
