And the local authorities and the French Office for Biodiversity indicated in a joint press release published on Monday that the restaurant “Le Caracoli” located in Desais was obliged to “pay a fine of 375 thousand euros, to put the site back in the condition and remove its facilities from the beach within 3 months upon payment of a daily fine of 1500.00 euros.
The Basse-Terre court issued this decision on April 28.
The company “Karakoli Beach and Spa” carried out the occupation in 2019 (…) to offer a “panoramic view of the sea”, after expanding the establishment in the public domain.
However, “these actions damaged natural vegetation, facilities were built on the sand and lighting was installed,” the statement said.
Inspectors from the French Office for Biodiversity saw it as “an attack on a protected habitat”, “in this case a sea turtle nesting beach”.
The restaurant was sued in 2018 by an association for the defense of the environment which denounced the illegal occupation of the maritime public domain and the damage to the environment, despite the support of local elected officials for such economic activities.
