SPA – Geneva:
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that one million people have been internally displaced in Somalia within 130 days, which is a record rate of displacement in the country.
She indicated that between the period from January 1 to May 10, more than 408,000 people were displaced due to the floods that swept their villages, and 312,000 were displaced due to the devastating drought, and most of them fled to the Hiran regions in central Somalia and Gedo in the south, as others fled because of the conflict.
The UNHCR representative in Somalia, Magatti Jessie, confirmed that the humanitarian needs in Somalia are increasing and that the UNHCR is working with partners to respond as best it can, but with the increasing number of displaced people every day, the needs are enormous, and this tragedy affects the most vulnerable groups in Somalia, and the number of internally displaced persons has become Somalia now has more than 3.8 million people, 6.7 million struggle to meet their food needs, and more than half a million children suffer from acute malnutrition, yet humanitarian agencies have so far received only 22% of the funding required to provide the assistance they need. Much needed.
UNHCR urged international donors to provide resources to respond to this human tragedy.
