18th Mount Everest Cultural Tourism Festival will be held in Shigatse

Located in the southwest of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Shigatse means “most beautiful manor” in Tibetan. It is one of the birthplaces of Tibetan culture, and a national historical and cultural city with a history of more than 600 years. Shigatse is the abode of the Panchen Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, the hometown of Mount Everest and the origin of the Yarlungzangbo River, known as the “ancestor of a thousand mountains and the source of a thousand waters”.

From June 18 to 25, 2023, the 18th Everest Culture Tourism Festival with the theme of “Hometown of Mount Everest and Auspicious Shigatse” will be held in Shigatse. In this seven-day festival, apart from organizing Tibetan opera singing competition, non-material cultural heritage dance performance, calligraphy, painting and photography exchange exhibition, special agricultural products, livestock products, ethnic handicrafts, textile products, non-material cultural heritage products will be displayed. There will be an exhibition and sale. Also, many activities like “Everest Taste” food festival, “Supreme Love” Everest Wedding etc. will be organized. In this way the elements of art, history, food, ethnic customs, natural landscape etc. will be integrated in the existing culture and tourism festival, which is very worth seeing.

Let us tell you that Shigatse is an important tourist destination of Tibet Autonomous Region, it has abundant tourism resources and a long history of culture. According to statistics, Shigatse has more than 300 different types of tourism resources, including 60 first-level tourism areas. In addition, the city is rich in humanities and cultural resources, with 238 intangible cultural heritage projects. In addition to non-material cultural heritage song-dances like Tweshye, Chyashye etc., there are also traditional festivals like Tama Festival and Wangkwo Festival.

At the 18th Everest Culture Tourism Festival, visitors can listen to the melodious tunes of Tibetan opera and enjoy Tveshye song and dance. In addition, the towering Mount Everest, the Yarlungzangbo River, the world-famous Tashilhunpo Monastery, stirring traditional song and dance, and unique Tibetan ethnic customs attract countless domestic and foreign tourists to stop and stay in Shigatse.
