The global technology industry is mourning the death of S. “Soma” Somasegar, the longtime Microsoft executive and Madrona Venture Group managing director whose influence helped shape the modern developer ecosystem and mentor a generation of startup founders, engineers, and tech leaders. Somasegar died unexpectedly on May 19 at the age of 59, according to statements released by Madrona and multiple colleagues across Silicon Valley.
Born in Puducherry, India, Somasegar spent nearly three decades at Microsoft, where he became one of the company’s most respected engineering leaders. He joined Microsoft in 1989 and contributed to eight releases of Windows, including foundational work on Windows NT before eventually rising to Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Developer Division. In that role, he oversaw major platforms including Visual Studio, .NET, developer tools, enterprise infrastructure, and Microsoft’s broader developer ecosystem strategy during a transformative period for the company.
Following his retirement from Microsoft in 2015, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group, where he focused on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, enterprise software, and next-generation cloud infrastructure startups. Over the past decade, he became deeply involved with the Seattle startup ecosystem, mentoring entrepreneurs and backing emerging technology companies while serving on multiple boards.
News of his death triggered an emotional wave of tributes from across the technology industry, with many executives, founders, and former Microsoft employees describing him as one of the most generous mentors in Silicon Valley.
Satya Nadella called Somasegar “a remarkable leader” who helped shape Microsoft’s developer ecosystem and empower engineers around the world. Nadella, who first met Somasegar in the early 1990s, said his impact on Microsoft and the wider technology community “will live on.”
Investor and White House AI adviser Sriram Krishnan shared an emotional tribute on X, saying Somasegar played a defining role in both his and Aarthi Ramamurthy’s careers. Krishnan said Somasegar helped them secure their first jobs in tech and supported them despite being a senior executive at Microsoft at the time.
GeekWire reported that tributes poured in rapidly from former colleagues, founders, and startup operators who consistently described Somasegar as humble, calm, generous with his time, and deeply invested in helping others succeed. Many said those personal qualities mattered even more than his technical accomplishments.
Madrona Venture Group said in its memorial statement that Somasegar “raised the bar” professionally and personally and described him as “unique at every level.” The firm added that its focus remains on supporting his wife Akila, their two daughters, the Madrona team, and the broader Microsoft and Silicon Valley communities grieving the loss.
Throughout his career, Somasegar became widely respected not just for engineering leadership but also for helping Microsoft navigate major platform transitions. During his tenure, Microsoft expanded its developer ecosystem, enterprise tooling, and cloud-focused infrastructure while adapting to the rise of open-source technologies and internet-scale software development.
After moving into venture capital, he backed several high-profile cloud and AI companies and became increasingly influential in startup investing. His work at Madrona focused on machine learning, intelligent applications, robotic process automation, and next-generation cloud infrastructure.
Somasegar was also connected to growing efforts around cricket in the United States. He was among investors linked to Major League Cricket initiatives alongside Satya Nadella and other technology executives supporting the sport’s expansion in America.
The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
As tributes continue across social media and the tech industry, Somasegar is being remembered as far more than a Microsoft executive or venture capitalist.
