NEW YORK – Thirty years of settled daytime television hierarchy shifted Tuesday morning when the nominations for the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards placed Beyond the Gates, a CBS soap opera that premiered this January, in direct contention with some of the genre’s oldest institutions.

The show – the first new daytime drama to air on a major broadcast network in nearly three decades – collected 15 nominations in its debut Emmy season, more than General Hospital, which earned 13 and is chasing an unprecedented third consecutive Outstanding Drama Series win when the ceremony takes place October 30 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

The Young and the Restless led all programs with 18 nominations. Days of Our Lives earned eight. The nominations were announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at noon Eastern time Tuesday.

“We’re proud to honor the extraordinary talent and creative teams whose work continues to define and elevate daytime television,” NATAS CEO Adam Sharp said in a statement.

Beyond the Gates debuted on CBS in January, built around a fictional wealthy Black family and developed with involvement from Shonda Rhimes’s production company. The show arrived 27 years after Passions, the last new daytime soap to air on a major American broadcast network. Fifteen nominations in year one – including in the Drama Series category – represents either a genuine breakthrough or the academy’s deliberate signal that daytime needed new blood.

General Hospital won back-to-back Drama Series titles at the 51st and 52nd ceremonies, becoming only the second show to win consecutively in the modern era. Three wins in a row would place it in different territory entirely.

The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series field drew five of the genre’s most established names: Eric Braeden (The Young and the Restless), Steve Burton (General Hospital), Scott Clifton (The Bold and the Beautiful), Thorsten Kaye (The Bold and the Beautiful), and Christian Jules LeBlanc (The Young and the Restless). Braeden, who has played Victor Newman since 1980, has never won the individual award despite decades of nominations. LeBlanc has won it four times.

Lead Actress nominees include Stacy Haiduk, Karla Mosley, Michelle Stafford, Heather Tom, and Tamara Tunie – a field that spans Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless. Beyond the Gates placed more heavily in supporting and technical categories, where debut programs typically find their footing before advancing to lead acting recognition.

Days of Our Lives earned eight nominations, a figure that reflects its diminished footprint since moving to Peacock – and its continued ability to draw Emmy voters three years after leaving NBC’s linear broadcast platform. The show occupies an unusual middle space: still producing, still recognized, but no longer part of the traditional daytime viewing routine that shaped the genre.

The talk and entertainment divisions showed less disruption. Outstanding Talk Series nominees include The View, The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Drew Barrymore Show, Live with Kelly and Mark, Today with Jenna & Friends, and 3rd Hour TODAY. Individual host nominations went to Kelly Clarkson, Tamron Hall, Jennifer Hudson, and Sherri Shepherd, alongside the collective cast of The View.

The Entertainment News category maintained its usual roster: Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and Extra. The stability of this field contrasts sharply with the drama competition, where the arrival of Beyond the Gates upended a hierarchy that had been largely fixed for the better part of a decade.

According to the full nominees list published by the Hollywood Reporter, Beyond the Gates received nominations across writing, directing, and at least four performance categories – suggesting broad voter support rather than a concentrated push in one area.

Whether that breadth translates to wins in October is a separate question. Emmy voters who nominated the show may weigh it differently when choosing among winners. General Hospital has decades of voter relationships built into its campaign infrastructure. Beyond the Gates is learning all of this in real time, navigating its first awards season without institutional memory.

What is not debatable is that the 53rd Daytime Emmy cycle started differently than any in recent memory. A show that did not exist eighteen months ago is now competing for the genre’s most prestigious award against programs that have been on the air for more than 60 years.

The 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards air October 30 on CBS.
