CHARLOTTE – Chris Brazzell II had never taken a snap in an NFL game. On a Wednesday morning in late July, during a non-contact training camp drill in Charlotte, he lost the chance to take one this season.
The Carolina Panthers confirmed that Brazzell, the rookie wide receiver they selected 83rd overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, will undergo surgery on a torn lateral collateral ligament in his left knee and miss the entire 2026 season. A second medical opinion obtained after the initial diagnosis confirmed the need for surgery, the team said.
The injury came without contact. Brazzell was working through a route when he went down during practice at the Panthers’ facility. Dave Canales, the head coach, confirmed the severity quickly. “We’re obviously very disappointed for Chris,” Canales said, according to the team’s official announcement. “He brings a rare skill set in his route running and body control, and we were excited about what he could do for this team.”
Brazzell spent two seasons at Tennessee, where he drew attention for his size-speed combination at 6-foot-4 and 198 pounds. He is 22 years old. He had not played a professional game before the injury ended his chances of playing one in 2026.
His absence forces the Panthers to reconfigure a wide receiver room that was already sorting itself out. Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker figure to start on the outside, with Xavier Legette and John Metchie competing for the third wideout role that Brazzell was considered a candidate to earn. Carolina addressed the depth immediately by signing Casey Washington, a former Atlanta Falcons receiver, in the days following the injury.
The signing of Washington is a roster patch, not a replacement. Washington was a practice squad piece for the Falcons; Brazzell was supposed to be part of something more durable. The Panthers invested a third-round pick in a receiver with contested-catch ability and route discipline that organizations spend years developing. They will wait at least one full year to find out whether that investment holds.
LCL injuries in the NFL vary in severity. A complete tear requiring surgery typically carries a recovery timeline of six to nine months, a range that keeps alive a theoretical return for the opening weeks of the 2027 season. The Panthers placed Brazzell on the injured reserve list, making his absence official for all of 2026.
Bryce Young, entering his third NFL season, will work without the rookie weapon the Panthers believed could stretch defenses at the catch radius. Young has benefited most when receivers win routes at the top of their stem and create separation in traffic. Brazzell was recruited specifically for that profile. The Panthers, who closed the 2025 regular season with a tight rain-soaked finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will spend 2026 asking Legette and Metchie to fill that role while Brazzell rehabilitates.
The NFC South picture has shifted at multiple organizations this summer. The Buccaneers have their own complications, with Baker Mayfield’s contract situation stalling before the regular season opens. Carolina’s loss of Brazzell adds another variable to a division that was already resetting across its rosters heading into August.
The timing of the injury carries its own particular weight. Non-contact injuries during training camp drills are the kind that no medical evaluation catches in advance, because they are not the product of accumulated wear or contact. Brazzell was doing what receivers do in July. The joint failed under forces the drill was not designed to create. The Panthers had not yet had any opportunity to evaluate what they spent a third-round pick on in a game context. There was no film to study, no situation to second-guess.
What the organization does not yet know is where Brazzell will land physically on the far side of surgery and rehabilitation. An LCL repair carries less structural uncertainty than anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, but the recovery still requires the player to rebuild trust in a joint that failed without contact, the most disorienting kind of failure for a young receiver whose game is built on acceleration and cut angles. Brazzell’s route running and body control, the traits Canales specifically identified, depend on exactly the kind of directional load an LCL bears.
The Panthers have not discussed a timeline beyond the placement on injured reserve. The 2027 draft class and the rebuild Canales is overseeing will continue without the player he called rare. Whether that description proves accurate will wait until at least next September.
