GREEN BAY, Wis. – Christian Watson was coughing up blood on the Packers’ sideline when an ambulance carried him out of Lambeau Field on Thursday night, and the stadium went quiet. By the third quarter he had hopped out of that same ambulance in his shoulder pads and run back into the game, and the place came apart in cheers.

The Green Bay Packers beat the Carolina Panthers 27-19 to move to 5-3, while Carolina fell to 3-4. Watson’s hospital tests came back clean except for a broken rib, the team said, and he still finished with eight catches for 113 yards.

The round trip was the night’s best story, but it was not what decided the game. Jordan Love did that, along with a pass rush that spent four quarters in Bryce Young’s face. What the Packers did not do was look clean: a fumbled opening kickoff, a missed extra point and a fourth quarter of stalled drives kept a comfortable lead from becoming a rout.

Jordan Love finished 30 of 41 for 288 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception, and Carolina’s blitzes mostly fed him. ESPN charted him at 13 completions on his first 14 attempts against the blitz, for 119 yards and two scores. Matthew Golden, Tucker Kraft and Josh Jacobs each caught a touchdown pass, and Jacobs added a 1-yard rushing score.

The passing game has quietly become the Packers’ identity. CBS Sports noted that Watson and Golden are the first teammates to each reach 600 receiving yards through eight games since Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in 2022, and that Love has thrown at least two touchdown passes in seven of Green Bay’s first eight games, something no Packers quarterback has done since Aaron Rodgers. The same report flagged Golden’s nine drops, the most in the NFL by a wide margin, and he dropped a pass again early on Thursday before pulling in a 24-yard touchdown just before halftime.

Defense is where coach Matt LaFleur kept steering the conversation afterward. He said he liked “the aggressive style” of the unit and credited its “relentless pressure,” according to the team’s postgame recap, as the offense sputtered late.

Linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper was the clearest example. A 2024 third-round pick whose snaps have grown with Zaire Franklin and Edgerrin Cooper hurt, he tipped a Young pass to himself in the second quarter for Green Bay’s only interception and broke up three passes. That turnover set up the touchdown that made it 20-10 at halftime. Young was sacked six times, and NFL Next Gen Stats, cited by ESPN, had him pressured on roughly 48 percent of his dropbacks.

Carolina did not leave quietly. Young led a 12-play, 70-yard drive and hit Jalen Coker for a 26-yard touchdown on fourth-and-3 in the fourth quarter, though the two-point try failed and it stayed an eight-point game. The Panthers also played short-handed in the secondary, CBS Sports reported, without cornerbacks Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and Akayleb Evans, and lost another corner to a hamstring injury in the second quarter. Chuba Hubbard carried 22 times for 81 yards and a score.

For Carolina, the loss stings more for what came before it. The Panthers arrived off a 43-13 home loss to Tampa Bay, and Young has now thrown four turnovers over two games and just two touchdown passes, ESPN noted, a sharp drop for a quarterback who set a franchise record with 11 through five games. Carolina still left Green Bay in a first-place tie with Atlanta in the NFC South, with Denver coming to town on November 8.

Green Bay’s ground game is a different story. Josh Jacobs managed 39 yards on 21 carries, and CBS Sports noted the Packers have the fewest rushing yards in NFL history for a team above .500 through eight games, with 485. Rookie kicker Trey Smack, meanwhile, hit the upright on the extra point after the first touchdown. ESPN counted it as his eighth miss of the season, the most in the league, though he has made kicks of 58 and 59 yards.

The evening had its oddities. Play paused briefly when a drone flew over the stadium, and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff led his teammates onto the field with the World Series trophy raised, a night after their title. Yahoo Sports described Watson’s return as a loud one even by that standard.

The Packers travel to face the New England Patriots on November 8. The reports reviewed do not say whether Watson’s broken rib will limit him there, or whether the kicking and the running game can be fixed by then.
