Joao Pedro tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a preparatory match before the Apertura 2026 season began, ESPN reported. The Brazilian forward – Atletico San Luis’s most dangerous offensive weapon and the most prolific scorer in the league over the past two tournaments – is gone for the season before it properly started. San Luis enters Jornada 3 against Club Tijuana still trying to figure out who they are without him.
The injury reframes everything about how San Luis approaches the next four months. Joao Pedro is not a player whose absence gets covered with tactical adjustments. He is the system – the focal point around whom movements were designed, the finisher opposing defenses spent the transfer window planning against. His goals in the previous two tournaments were not incidental to how San Luis played. They were the reason San Luis played the way they did.
The club moved quickly. San Luis signed Felipe Mora as a direct replacement in the summer window. Coach Diego Mejía has also given primary striking responsibility to Leonardo Flores, 23, who has not previously been asked to carry an attacking line at this level. Flores is 23 and carries the technical quality that convinced the coaching staff to give him the role. But there is a meaningful difference between flashing that quality in reserve appearances and sustaining it as a starter against a Tijuana side motivated to push its unbeaten run to three matches. How he handles that pressure – not just on Friday, but across the weeks ahead – is one of the central storylines of San Luis’s Apertura.
The table is not yet decided. Apertura 2026 is only in its third week, and the points gap between top and bottom is still narrow enough to recover from a slow start. But the window is not unlimited.
