NEWPORT BEACH — A year after drawing 1.8 million completed quizzes, Chipotle Mexican Grill is expanding its annual trivia competition into a three-day event offering more than $1 million in prizes, adding its first collectible card game in a test of whether brand loyalty can migrate beyond the app and into a trading-card economy.

Chipotle IQ returns August 18 through 20, with registration available through the Chipotle Rewards app and at ChipotleIQ.com. The prize structure includes free burritos for a year, cash awards, and merchandise, distributed through the Chipotle Rewards platform following competitive rounds. New additions for 2026 include daily streak bonuses, tiered incentives called Silver Tickets, and bracket-format gameplay that advances high scorers toward larger prizes.

For a company tracking roughly $12 billion in annual revenue, the cost structure is efficient. Last year’s Chipotle IQ generated nearly double the engagement of 2024 at a prize cost of just over $1 million, a ratio that most marketing channels cannot match. The 2026 expansion signals management’s confidence that the format can scale without proportional cost increases, as the chain pursues an expansion trajectory that has brought it to more than 4,200 North American locations.

“Fans completed more than 1.8 million Chipotle IQ quizzes last year, nearly double the number completed in 2024. With new challenges, more opportunities to earn rewards and our first-ever collectible card game, we’re creating an expanded Chipotle IQ experience that rewards real fandom while giving guests new ways to engage with Chipotle beyond the restaurant,” said Stephanie Perdue, Chipotle’s senior vice president for brand marketing, in the company’s announcement.

The tournament mechanics follow a bracket format familiar to fantasy sports participants. Participants answer food and culture trivia questions, accumulate points that determine placement, and top scorers advance to final rounds where the largest prizes are distributed. Every hour during the event window, the first 8,000 players to answer five questions correctly win rewards. The free-burritos-for-a-year incentive, distributed through 53 Silver Tickets across the event, remains the headline prize that drives the highest sign-up volume and social sharing.

The collectible card game is the 2026 edition’s most consequential addition. Chipotle has not disclosed the full scope of the card series, but the format tests a brand strategy expansion well beyond app engagement. Companies from McDonald’s to major sports leagues have deployed trading-card mechanics to generate secondary-market interest and community-driven social sharing, forms of earned media that conventional advertising budgets cannot replicate at comparable cost. Whether a restaurant chain can sustain that kind of collector community is a question the campaign does not yet answer.

Daily streaks, borrowed from engagement mechanics popularized by language-learning apps, reward players who return to the platform on consecutive days. The feature targets a chronic weakness of loyalty programs: most members join at a promotional moment and then disengage. Streak bonuses create a behavioral hook that drives return sessions to the app, independent of restaurant transactions, building the habit loop that justifies the program’s ongoing operational cost.

Chipotle’s loyalty program had approximately 40 million members as of mid-2025. The chain has not disclosed a more recent count, but management has consistently described active rewards members as spending more per visit and visiting more frequently than non-members. The chain’s second-quarter 2026 results reflected that dynamic: revenue reached $3.1 billion, with comparable restaurant sales rising 5.3%.

Scott Boatwright, who became chief executive after Brian Niccol departed to lead Starbucks’ turnaround effort, has framed digital engagement as a core pillar of Chipotle’s competitive positioning. The fast-casual sector is not static: Qdoba and a range of digitally native food brands have built loyal followings through app-first ordering and gamified reward mechanics. An August 18 launch date positions Chipotle IQ ahead of the late-summer back-to-school traffic window, when restaurant visits in college markets typically accelerate.

The data collection dimension of the campaign carries at least as much strategic weight as its marketing reach. ChipotleIQ.com registration captures email and behavioral data from participants who have not yet downloaded the Chipotle app, expanding the addressable base for future promotions. Each completed quiz generates preference data that informs menu and campaign development. In that framing, the $1 million prize pool functions partly as a data acquisition budget, not only a customer acquisition tool.

Whether the collectible card game sustains interest beyond this promotional window is the question the company has not yet answered. Trading card properties require ongoing IP development and community management to build the secondary-market vitality that justifies continued investment. For a restaurant chain, that represents an expansion into territory where Chipotle has no established track record.

What the chain does have is a loyalty program large enough to make the experiment meaningful. If 40 million members represent even a modest fraction of potential participants, the engagement ceiling on a well-executed collectible series is substantially higher than last year’s 1.8 million quizzes. The chain is betting that ceiling has not been reached.

Registration for Chipotle IQ opens August 18 through the Chipotle Rewards app and at ChipotleIQ.com. The competitive window runs through August 20, with prizes distributed through the Chipotle Rewards platform following the conclusion of tournament rounds. Chipotle Mexican Grill trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CMG.
