USA vs Belgium: Every Meeting From 1930 to the 2026 World Cup

Eight meetings, one American win, and it came in 1930. The full USA vs Belgium record, from Montevideo to the 4-1 in Seattle.

Malik Tillman’s equaliser lasted 118 seconds. He levelled it at Seattle Stadium in the 31st minute, the loudest the United States had been all tournament, and by the 33rd Charles De Ketelaere had scored his second and the game was gone again. That is the whole of USA vs Belgium in one passage of play: the Americans get close, and then they do not.

Belgium won 4-1 on 6 July 2026 to put the co-hosts out of their own World Cup in the round of 16. It was the eighth meeting between the countries and Belgium’s seventh straight win. The United States have beaten Belgium once, in 1930.

De Ketelaere scored inside nine minutes and the match never really left Belgium’s control after that. Tillman’s equaliser was the exception, and it was answered almost immediately.

Belgium won 4-1. The United States became the third and last of the three host nations to go out.

According to FIFA’s own match report, Belgium were in front inside nine minutes and never trailed. The third goal was the one that ended it as a contest. Goalkeeper Matt Freese came out of his area in the 57th minute to clear and missed the ball entirely; De Ketelaere collected it, and Hans Vanaken struck from distance, the shot evading Tim Ream’s attempted block on the line and finishing in an empty net. Freese has since said publicly that he expects never to fully get over the error, which is an unusually direct thing for a goalkeeper to say three weeks after a tournament.

The United States were also without Folarin Balogun, suspended after his red card against Bosnia, and that mattered more than a single absence normally would. Balogun had been the focal point of a front line that had just won a knockout tie with ten men. Our preview noted that the last time the sides met the United States lost by three, and that pattern held.

What the 2026 defeat actually exposed

The scoreline reads like a collapse. The tournament record does not.

NPR reported the exit as the end of a run that had already outperformed expectations. The United States reached the round of 16 as hosts, beat Bosnia 2-0 while down to ten men, and drew a 33.5 million television audience for that match, an all-time American soccer record. Then they met a side with De Ketelaere, Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne and the gap in the final third was the whole story. Belgium scored four times from a performance that was efficient rather than overwhelming.

Our fuller analysis of what the exit revealed about American soccer takes up the structural argument. The short version is that a host nation with record broadcast numbers and a well-organised defence still could not manufacture chances against a top-eight opponent, and that is a squad problem rather than a tactical one.

Mauricio Pochettino kept his job. US Soccer moved to extend him on a four-year deal running to the 2030 World Cup, covering qualifying, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Copa America.

USA vs Belgium in 2014: Tim Howard’s 16 saves

The 2014 meeting is the one Americans remember, and it is remembered for a goalkeeper in a losing team.

Belgium won 2-1 after extra time in Salvador on 1 July 2014. The 90 minutes finished goalless. De Bruyne scored in the 93rd minute and Lukaku in the 105th, Julian Green pulled one back in the 107th, and the United States could not find a second. Howard made 12 saves in regulation and four more in extra time. Sixteen in total, the most recorded in a World Cup match since the statistic began being tracked in 1966, and still the record: nothing at the 2026 tournament came near it.

The symmetry with 2026 is uncomfortable. Both were round-of-16 exits to Belgium. Both featured an American goalkeeper as the defining individual story, once in triumph and once in error.

The March 2026 friendly that predicted it

Three months before Seattle, the same two teams met in a friendly and Belgium won 5-2.

That result was read at the time as a meaningless spring tune-up. In hindsight it was the clearest available warning: the same defensive shape conceded five, and the same forward line scored twice without ever threatening to control the match. The World Cup meeting was a tighter version of the identical problem.

Eight meetings, one American win, no draws. Green marks the only United States victory. Belgium have won the last seven.

1930, and the only American win

The single United States victory over Belgium came in the first match of the first World Cup.

On 13 July 1930 in Montevideo, the United States beat Belgium 3-0 in the group stage of a 13-team tournament. That American side went on to reach the semi-finals, which remains the country’s best men’s World Cup finish. Ninety-six years later it is still the only time the United States have beaten Belgium in any competition.

Where both teams went next

Belgium did not go much further. Spain beat them 2-1 in the quarter-final in Los Angeles on 10 July, De Ketelaere scoring again before Fabian Ruiz equalised and Mikel Merino won it late.

Spain then won the tournament, beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium on 19 July through a Ferran Torres substitute goal. Belgium’s defeat of the United States, in other words, was not the beginning of a run. It was four days of momentum against a side that lost to the eventual champions.

When do USA and Belgium play again?

Not this autumn, and not on anything either federation has published.

US Soccer confirmed the opening four matches of Pochettino’s new cycle in August, and Belgium is not among them.

Peru in Orlando opens it, Chile in St. Louis three days later, then the two that will actually fill stadiums: Mexico in Glendale and Canada in St. Paul, as US Soccer set out when it announced the window. Beyond that the calendar runs through the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and 2030 qualifying, both under Pochettino.

Which leaves the record where Seattle left it. Eight meetings in ninety-six years, one American win, and no ninth on any published schedule. Whether it arrives as a friendly, a tournament draw or another knockout tie is not a question either federation has answered, and on the evidence of the last seven results it is not one the United States should be in a hurry to force.
