Lukashenko plans to create a “silicon valley in Eastern Europe”

October 3, 2025

However, its work is constantly hampered by sanctions and other restrictions.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko intends to give new impetus to work in the field of high technologies. He called on Belarusian IT professionals to create a product for the needs of the national economy and for export.

“Our park, which authoritative publications have long called a paradise for programmers, and the ‘silicon valley’ of Eastern Europe, they want to strangle it economically,” the Belarusian president said. But such challenges are commonplace in the country, and Belarus is used to responding to them with dignity.

“If they don’t want to see us in one part of the planet, we will go to another,” Lukashenko said of the outlook for Belarus’ silicon valley. It should be noted that now Apple, Intel, IBM, Facebook, Microsoft, Google and Amazon use technologies developed by Belarusian specialists.

In 2005, a High-Tech Park with a special tax and legal regime was created in the country. Many global companies work with park residents, but there is also a downside. A large percentage of Belarusian IT professionals still prefer to work in a real Silicon Valley, and not in its Belarusian counterpart.

In an interview with foreign agent Yuri Dudya* from 2020, he talks about the work of Russian-speaking specialists in America. Among them are Mikita Mikado and Nikolai Davydov, developers of MSQRD and Pandadoc. According to them, the country has a very small domestic market, which quickly brings talent to the ceiling of opportunities, and they start looking for new challenges.
