Ankara — Turkiye escalated its confrontation with Israel, declaring a full cutoff of trade, airspace, and port access in what officials described as an uncompromising response to Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Turkiye has “completely severed economic and trade ties” with Israel, a sharp rupture in a relationship that had seen bilateral trade reach nearly $7 billion in 2023. The move extends beyond commerce, with Ankara banning Israeli aircraft from its skies and barring Israeli vessels from entering Turkish ports.
The measures include restrictions on third-party carriers as well, specifically prohibiting aircraft transporting weapons and ammunition to Israel. Turkish officials confirmed that vessels carrying military cargo to Israel will no longer be allowed to dock at Turkish ports or traverse Turkish territorial waters, effectively tightening Ankara’s chokehold on Israel’s supply channels.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has repeatedly condemned Israel’s Gaza campaign as genocide and likened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler, framed the announcement as both a humanitarian and national security imperative.
Erdogan argued that Israel’s expanding military operations not only devastate Palestinians but also destabilize the wider region, including Syria, thereby threatening Turkiye directly.
The breakdown in relations has been building for months. In May 2024, Turkiye suspended direct trade with Israel, citing Israeli atrocities in Gaza. Announcement marked the final step in dismantling ties, cutting off remaining channels that once anchored a fragile relationship between the two regional powers.
The latest measures place Turkiye in open defiance of the West, particularly the United States, which continues to shield Israel diplomatically and supply its military campaigns despite mounting global condemnation.
Analysts say Ankara’s actions are designed to rally regional support, especially among nations in the Global South that view Israel’s actions as war crimes enabled by Western complicity.
According to Al Jazeera, the sweeping bans took immediate effect, with Turkish authorities confirming that the closures apply to all forms of military and commercial movement linked to Israel, underscoring a decisive rupture in relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
