Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Vogelpark Schotten opens a donation account

Scots (red). The bird park in Schotten is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Hesse. As a result of the closure due to the Corona crisis, important income such as entrance fees or sales in Café Vogelpark and the affiliated training center are no longer available. Inspired by the spontaneous support of long-time visitors, the bird park came up with a fundraiser.

The team had been working hard to open the new season, which was scheduled for March 21. Work was done on small and large construction sites everywhere. Fences were torn down and new ones erected. Foundations were prepared, old paths were expanded, earthworks were done, old playground equipment was torn down, new playground equipment was built. It was shoveled, dredged, concreted, drilled, screwed and hammered. A new stable with shelter and seating for visitors was built.

Enclosures were rebuilt or refurbished and a new terrarium was installed. Walls were given a new coat of paint, plants were cut, beds worked, and signs milled. When everything was ready, the ministerial stop came because of the corona pandemic. As a workshop for disabled people, the bird park employs 31 people with disabilities – and they had to close. It was difficult for those affected to bear, as they had been looking forward to the new season with many visitors and families with children.

Finally, there should be living in the park again and the animals should be petted and food bags with vegetable croquettes. For the employees, the closure means that they have to stay at home or spend the day in the residential facilities of Schottener Soziale Dienste gGmbH. This is a special challenge for people who are used to working outdoors and are particularly committed to “their animals”.

However, the bird park cannot generate any income through the closure. But these are essential to cover running costs. As a result of the closure, not only are the entrance fees missing, but the revenue in the Café Vogelpark and the affiliated training center is also falling away.

Over Easter and during the Easter holidays, the bird park is a popular destination for young and old. April is the month with the most visitors. One, therefore, expects further significant losses, because according to the bird park this cannot be compensated for in the current season – no matter at what time it may open again.

The longer the winter break is extended by the Infection Protection Act, the more precarious the situation will become for the employees with support needs and also for the management, who has the financial responsibility, say the responsible persons. Nevertheless, one is pleased about numerous inquiries and support offers from loyal visitors. The animals are doing well, there is enough food and they are being looked after very well by the animal keepers. There will be no shortage of it, no matter how long the park will be closed.

Some visitors would have helped spontaneously by sponsoring an animal themselves or by donating. Such gestures of support help, because one cannot simply shut down operations or put urgently needed investments on the back burner. The bird park offers owners of an annual pass purchased before March 16 to extend it for the 2021 season.

Inspired by the already experienced support, a donation account was set up for the bird park: Bank for Social Economy, IBAN: DE04 5502 0500 0008 6075 00, BIC: BFSWDE33MNZ, keyword “Vogelpark-Corona”. An address should be provided so that a donation receipt can be sent. As of a donation of 75 euros or more, there is an annual ticket for adults as a thank you, from 100 euros an annual ticket for families.
