For photography with phones and cameras.. Learn about the best ways to use flash

– Published on:

The flash light on the camera to illuminate the area around the subject, spoils the atmosphere and weakens the quality of the image to look as if it is artificial… What are the best ways to use the flash?

Sophia Zimmermann, a specialist in photography, explains, according to Al-Jazeera Net, that "The sensors in modern cameras are very sensitive to light, so that the photographer does not have to use the flash".

And the cameras, which are not more than about 5 years old, can capture low light, as is the case in restaurants, places of worship, and scenes around the campfire, and they also take pictures clearly, and this also applies to smartphones.

Sophia Zimmermann added "Modern smartphones have a built-in night mode that allows you to take several pictures automatically, one after the other, and the built-in software computes them into one image that is relatively well lit, even bright pictures of the sky can be taken".

Flash tips:

Exposure Time setting

And the photographer can manually change the amount of light to be captured by adjusting "exposure time" lens aperture and sensitivity "iso" (ISO) of the camera, and when the sensitivity is set to a high value, the sensor captures more light.

But care must be taken; As the expert Sophia Zimmermann explained "Depending on the type of camera, interference signals may occur, such as background noise in images, so this procedure is not suitable for any subject".

Photographers point out that background noise is disturbances caused by pixels being blurred or improperly arranged, and current digital cameras are characterized by small sensors that capture noise-free images with a sensitivity "ISO 3200" (ISO 3200), as for a high-performance full-frame camera, it works with a sensitivity of more than "ISO 6400" (ISO 6400). The German expert confirmed that this degree of sensitivity allows capturing evening scenes, but does not necessarily allow obtaining ultra-clear portrait images.

Sporting events and portraiture

Professional photographer Daniel Volstein uses flash light carefully, he said "I usually dispense with the flash unit when photographing events and reports, but in return I rely on the flash when photographing sporting events, portraiture images and some still images". The flash light freezes the fast motions of sports games in poor lighting conditions.

Photography is considered a play on the chord of light and shadow, and without light it is not possible to discover the formations (composition) on the subject of photography, and the details and features of the face remain unclear, and the intensity and size of the shadows are due to the distance between the subject of photography and the light source.

Flash light offers many advantages when used, Daniel Volstein said "The flash controls the direction of light manually, so the photographer can determine the direction of light himself and use it creatively, which is ideal when taking portrait photos".

Andreas Lindelaer, a professional photographer in Hamburg, Germany, advised photography enthusiasts to use the flash carefully, by using a hidden flash, so that the viewer of the image does not recognize it after that, or the corresponding flash of light to weaken the contrast of intense light shadows, however, using the flash properly requires Lots of training and practice, and it has to be set up again with each new shooting situation.

Tripod

Andreas Lindelaer recommends using a tripod when using flash so that no distortion appears in the image. The German expert explained that with the use of a tripod, long exposure times can be achieved without image flickering, and depending on the subject of photography, the flash may not be necessary.

And when using tripods with smartphones, they help in capturing a very clear picture with a long shutter speed of up to 3 seconds, which is sufficient for recording romantic evenings around campfires, and the tripod does not replace the flash except in certain situations such as recording portraits or still images ; A long exposure captures enough light to record the subject clearly.
